We are looking for a Student in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering to engage in the design and testing of rules and methods for liquid hydrogen tanks made from CFRP, tailored for aeronautic and space applications through cryogenic testing. This opportunity is available for a bachelor thesis, master thesis, or student research paper.
Your Responsibilities:
To achieve ambitious goals in reducing CO2 emissions, innovative technical solutions are essential to break the global reliance on fossil fuels in commercial aviation. One promising approach is transitioning from conventional propulsion systems to hydrogen-based alternatives. Investigations are underway at various DLR locations into solutions such as fuel cells powering electrically driven propellers and hydrogen-fueled gas turbines. Both methods necessitate the safe integration of robust hydrogen storage systems into aircraft structures, particularly under liquefied conditions (-253°C). Consequently, new structural components must be designed to endure the thermal stresses associated with these extreme temperatures, alongside the mechanical loads experienced during flight and on the ground. The Institute of Lightweight Systems is developing new design solutions, focusing on Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) as a viable material for lightweight liquid hydrogen tanks.
This student position offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in developing lightweight structures under significant thermo-mechanical loading. Your research paper, bachelor, or master thesis will contribute to DLR's research activities by focusing on the validation of design rules and methods through cryogenic testing of CFRP laminates.
The planned tasks include:
- Ongoing development and application of the Cryo-TMLA Tool (Python)
- Creation and testing of CFRP specimens equipped with Fiber Optic Sensors, thermocouples, and bonded strain gauges, conducting cryogenic tests with liquid nitrogen
- Operation of scientific measurement equipment (FOS, strain gauges, etc.)
- Analysis and validation of calculation results
- Documentation and presentation of findings
What We Expect From You:
- You are a student in aerospace engineering or mechanical engineering
- You possess strong programming skills, preferably in Python
- You have a foundational understanding of technical mechanics and heat transfer
- Ideally, you have experience with fiber-reinforced polymers and are familiar with classical laminate theory, network theory, and CFRP manufacturing
- Experience in cryogenic testing and handling scientific measurement equipment is a plus
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is essential
