Nr. 367: Feedstock evaluation for aviation biofuels production

Role Overview:

The future of aviation hinges on the substantial adoption of renewable fuels to ensure sustainable growth while minimizing climate impacts associated with kerosene combustion. By utilizing biomass-derived fuels that sequester an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, we can achieve a theoretically carbon-neutral flight.

The conversion of biomass into renewable aviation fuels involves a series of complex processes, each with various options for enhancing efficiency, carbon utilization, and by-product management. The inherent variability in the chemical composition, heating value, and processing characteristics of renewable biomass presents unique challenges.

Your primary responsibility will be to assess how the characteristics of different biomass types influence the selection of processing pathways, energetic and exergetic efficiencies, and overall production costs. This research will inform adjustments in biomass processing within ongoing European research initiatives, focusing on the technical, economic, and ecological evaluations necessary for renewable fuel production.

We seek a candidate who can develop a practical framework linking key biomass parameters to optimal processing conditions, maximizing efficiency and value addition. A strong background in biomass characterization and processing is essential.

The ideal candidate will be adept at identifying viable biofuels production pathways, recognizing their limitations, challenges, and potential for enhancement. You will apply and refine techno-economic assessment methodologies related to biomass processing.

Qualifications:
  • PhD in Chemistry, Process Engineering, Physics, or related fields, with expertise in biomass characterization and processing techniques such as gasification, liquefaction, or torrefaction.
  • Proficiency in chemical process simulation and the ability to interpret simulation outcomes.
  • Experience in technical, economic, and ecological evaluations of processes, with a focus on identifying improvements in biofuels production.
  • Familiarity with European Research projects, particularly within the Horizon 2020 framework, is advantageous.
  • Strong command of English is required.
What We Offer:

DLR is committed to diversity, respect, and equality for all individuals. We encourage independent work and support the personal and professional development of our employees through various training and growth opportunities. We prioritize equal opportunities and aim to enhance the representation of women in science and leadership roles. Qualified applicants with disabilities will receive preference.
