PhD Research Associate

The Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung gGmbH is seeking a PhD Research Associate (f/m/x) for a temporary engagement, as part of a new EU-funded initiative led by the Politics of Digitalisation (POLDI) research group. This position is designed for a duration of three years, with a part-time commitment of 29.25 hours per week (75%). The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Dr. Julia Pohle, co-leader of the POLDI research group. The WZB Berlin Social Science Center is a publicly funded research institution dedicated to pioneering, theory-driven, and problem-oriented social science research. Our researchers hail from diverse backgrounds and engage in various social science disciplines, including sociology, political science, economics, law, and psychology.
Project Overview
The FORSEE (Forging Successful AI Applications for European Economy and Society) project is a collaborative effort funded by the European Union, coordinated by the University College Dublin. This project aims to provide sociologically informed insights into stakeholders' expectations and success criteria concerning AI systems. It will explore how these align with existing governance frameworks, such as the regulatory structure of the AI Act, and with other significant strategic priorities and values of the EU, particularly digital autonomy, sustainability, and fundamental rights. FORSEE aspires to develop a revised conceptualization of AI systems evaluation and a democratized approach to AI governance, informed by sociological research into real-world AI applications, institutional contexts, public discussions, and competing stakeholder perspectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct qualitative research, focusing on policy analysis and discourse analysis;
- Prepare and conduct expert interviews;
- Interpret and present research findings;
- Participate in project meetings;
- Contribute to the preparation and co-authorship of scientific publications;
- Engage in and present results at academic events;
- Assist the project lead in planning and coordinating project activities and reports;
- Participate in regular team meetings and colloquia of the WZB research group.
- Master's degree in a social science discipline (preferably political science, communication studies, STS, or a related field) with excellent academic performance;
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively;
- Prior experience in discourse and policy analysis;
- Demonstrated interest or expertise in the thematic area of the project;
- Proficient in both oral and written English;
- Knowledge of German is an advantage.
