Interdisciplinary Researcher in Ornamental Logic

vor 1 Monat

Bremen, Bremen, Deutschland University of Bremen Vollzeit

Position Overview
This role presents an exceptional opportunity for collaboration within a vibrant research community at the University of Bremen, engaging with both computer graphics experts and various project collaborators. The successful applicant will join a supportive and dynamic team dedicated to advancing visual computing and virtual reality.

Key Responsibilities

The primary objective of this interdisciplinary initiative is to innovate techniques for extracting and visualizing information from digitized artworks, enabling art historians to deepen their understanding of these pieces and their historical contexts.

Focusing on the ornamental art of the 18th century, specifically the rocaille style, this project tackles a rich array of shapes and structures, presenting intriguing challenges in the fields of computer science and machine learning. The project will emphasize high-resolution etchings that have been previously digitized.

The selected candidate will collaborate closely with art historians to establish suitable representations, structures, and similarity metrics for the scanned artworks. A significant outcome of this project will be the development of software tools that art historians can utilize in their research, facilitating the classification of rocaille ornaments, tracing design evolutions, differentiating between various authors, and identifying similarities across artworks.

Essential methodologies for these tasks will encompass machine learning, computer vision, graph algorithms, geometric computing, along with proficient programming capabilities.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess an outstanding Master's degree or its equivalent in fields such as computer science, physics, mathematics, or computational engineering. Essential qualifications include substantial experience in programming and software development, alongside a strong command of English (reading, writing, and speaking). Familiarity with machine learning and computer vision is advantageous, as is the ability to apply mathematical methods effectively. Knowledge of mathematical curves, graphs, and textures will also be beneficial. The ideal candidate will be self-driven, passionate about their research, and adept at working both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting.

Benefits

The University of Bremen is a mid-sized institution with a diverse student body of approximately 20,000, offering a wide array of benefits including sports facilities, cultural activities, and childcare services.

Applications should include a cover letter, a comprehensive CV detailing achievements, degree certificates (with a list of courses and grades), and contact information for at least two referees, along with any additional credentials (e.g., recommendation letters, publications). While immediate applications are encouraged, the review process will continue until the position is filled. For any inquiries regarding the role, please feel free to reach out.
