The increasing incorporation of renewable energy sources and decentralized energy resources (DER) into the electrical grid is resulting in a rising number of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). A VPP is composed of interconnected distributed power generation units, adaptable energy consumers, and storage solutions. These elements are aggregated and managed as a unified entity to supply electricity to the grid or specific clients. In this scenario, utility companies and VPP managers depend on extensive communication networks to remotely oversee or coordinate various DER. Such DER includes renewable energy facilities, battery storage systems, and inverter-connected devices like electric vehicles and heat pumps.
VPP managers are becoming increasingly cognizant of the necessity to enhance the cyber resilience of their systems. This awareness stems from the understanding that cyber threats can significantly disrupt their operational efficiency, hinder customer service, and jeopardize the stability of the entire power grid. Consequently, it is crucial for VPP managers to possess tools and strategies to proactively evaluate and enhance their overall cyber resilience framework.
We are seeking enthusiastic students interested in undertaking a challenging thesis in the domain of cyber resilience for Virtual Power Plants (VPP). The focus of this work will be on the design, execution, and assessment of a cyber resilience self-assessment framework tailored to the unique characteristics and demands of VPP.
Key Responsibilities
Potential tasks may encompass the following:
- Task 1: Comprehensive Literature Review on Cyber Resilience Definitions: Conduct an extensive review of existing literature to identify definitions and metrics of cyber resilience, as well as analyze current methodologies for measuring cyber resilience.
- Task 2: Development of a Weighted Cyber Resilience Model: Based on insights from the literature review, create a novel approach for assessing the cyber resilience of the underlying IT infrastructure of VPPs. An anticipated outcome is a weighted cyber resilience quantification function that encapsulates essential attributes necessary for maintaining VPP functionality. This function should be developed utilizing common features and categories from key European and international standards and frameworks, such as the EU NIS-2 Directive, EU Cyber Resilience Act, MITRE Cyber Resiliency Metrics, NIST SP Vol. 2, IEC TS:2023, EN IEC:2020, ETSI ES V, ETSI TR V, and others.
- Task 3: Design and Implementation of a Self-Assessment Tool: Drawing from the findings of Tasks 1 and 2, develop a web-based tool for the self-assessment of cyber resilience in VPPs. Technical aspects such as interfaces with various VPP components, protocols for data transmission and analysis, as well as synergies and conflicts with security and privacy-by-design mechanisms should be considered.
- Task 4: Evaluation: Assess the utility, effectiveness, and usability of the developed tool and gather feedback from end-users. Additionally, you will be expected to analyze the results of the evaluation studies and formulate well-founded recommendations for further development and optimization of the tool. Explore technical enhancement opportunities to further fortify the cyber resilience of VPPs.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Genuine interest in contemporary developments in the area of cyber resilience.
- Familiarity with energy systems and software development is advantageous.
- Interest in interdisciplinary research areas such as cyber security engineering, human factors in security and privacy, and usable security and privacy.
- A strong sense of initiative and teamwork.
- Proficient language skills in German or English.
