Senior Vice President of Administration

Position Overview
This pivotal role encompasses a broad scope within a dynamic and intricate global organization. Reporting directly to the Director General, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will possess substantial delegated authority and independence within EMBL's matrix management framework to steer the administration and operations across all six sites. The objective is to ensure the seamless integration and operational efficiency of the Laboratory's research support and administrative functions to align with its innovative scientific objectives. The COO will play a crucial role as a member of the Directorate, which constitutes EMBL's senior leadership and management team.
In collaboration with the International Relations Office, the appointee will cultivate strong partnerships with national and local authorities at EMBL's host sites.
A vital aspect of this position involves maintaining a collaborative relationship with the governing EMBL Council of member states, particularly its Finance Committee, which is responsible for establishing the Laboratory's financial policies, budgets, and employment terms. The COO will be tasked with nurturing and advancing close working relationships with Council delegates and will take charge of developing and presenting administrative and operational policies, updates, and reports for the formal biannual meetings of the Council and Finance Committee.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate may come from diverse backgrounds, including commercial, non-profit, or academic sectors. Experience in a research academic environment and familiarity with international intergovernmental organizations will be advantageous.
A robust background in Administrative and Operational leadership is essential, along with a proven track record of delivering effective support services in a research or similar establishment of comparable size and complexity to EMBL. Financial acumen is necessary, with the ability to oversee intricate budgetary information across the organization and contribute to the development of the organization's strategic and financial plans. Experience in managing Pension Funds is critical, along with an understanding of the unique legal framework governing EMBL as an International Intergovernmental Organization.
This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to collaborate constructively with colleagues from various disciplines and nationalities at all levels across all sites. We seek a diplomatic communicator who is politically astute and can navigate both scientific and administrative contexts at strategic and operational levels. Proficiency in English and German is essential.
