Position: Translational Science Lead (all genders)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Translational Science Lead (TSL) plays a pivotal role in advancing our oncology initiatives. This position significantly influences the successful advancement of global development programs and the expansion of our pipeline, overseeing processes from initial target evaluation to lifecycle management. The TSL is responsible for establishing the vision and strategic direction of assigned projects, focusing on state-of-the-art precision medicine, including patient segmentation and proof of mechanism for product differentiation from pre-D1 through registration, incorporating companion diagnostics strategies as needed.
The TSL develops a comprehensive translational strategy and ensures its effective implementation for all development programs under the Translational Sciences Oncology (TSO) umbrella, providing leadership in translational science for one or more global development initiatives with full decision-making authority.
Main Responsibilities Include:
Formulating the integrated translational sciences strategy presented to the Integrated Project Team (IPT), strategically guiding global translational science activities by offering expertise and leadership in precision medicine. The TSL guarantees high-quality and timely Translational Science deliverables to create sustained value for patients and the business, ensuring a cohesive translational vision and strategy for the respective assets. Crafting translational strategies from preclinical phases, facilitating the transition of new agents into clinical settings, starting with target validation/pre-D1. Providing critical input and ongoing support for preclinical projects with translational science expertise, including the design of companion diagnostics that meet various health authority requirements. Ensuring an innovative and cutting-edge global translational science portfolio (from early to late development/lifecycle management) by establishing a patient-centric vision and managing strategic partnerships with technology providers and key opinion leaders. Participation in joint coordination committees, steering committees, and advisory boards may be required to maximize the value of Bayer's oncology portfolio. Accountable for the timely achievement of translational science milestones, addressing obstacles, and empowered to make decisions that effectively implement the translational strategy. Guiding and significantly contributing to the preclinical evaluation and validation of new oncology assets in alignment with the overarching RED ONC strategy, focusing on value, differentiation, and unmet medical needs. In alignment with the overall oncology strategy and Precision Medicine community, identifying new collaboration opportunities and fostering excellent relationships with both new and existing partners, both within and outside of Bayer, to promote excellence in Translational Science. Leading and driving TSO-initiated cross-functional strategic initiatives in support of the overall TSO, RED-ONC, Oncology, and/or Bayer strategy; representing TSO in other cross-functional activities and workstreams as necessary. Independently leading self-empowered matrix teams in accordance with Bayer's VACC leadership standards, enabling and supporting colleagues in a high-performance environment characterized by psychological safety. The TSL is accountable for team outcomes and promotes a collaborative atmosphere between clinicians and scientists. Fostering a culture of ownership within the TSO team, supporting the strategy in line with Bayer's values; empowering others and promoting peer accountability across portfolio deliverables. Enhancing TSO's unique value contribution and driving the development of a productive and fulfilled workforce by embracing a culture of creativity and innovation, ensuring that capabilities are available and continuously evolving.QUALIFICATIONS
MD and/or PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field. Extensive industry experience in biomarkers/precision medicine with a proven track record of successful leadership. Demonstrated scientific excellence through a history of relevant basic and/or translational research published in peer-reviewed journals. Outstanding drug development expertise, with the ability to integrate innovation to advance Precision Medicine in Oncology, along with a robust network of key opinion leaders and relevant external companies. Familiarity with global health authority interactions for both drug and device divisions, current knowledge of regulatory review processes, and an understanding of the scientific, commercial, ethical, and legal aspects of the field. Ability to prioritize effectively, seize strategic opportunities, and maintain high standards. Excellent communication and leadership skills, combined with strategic thinking and insights into business and external trends. Outcome-focused, with the ability to independently define and proactively deliver on ambitious pipeline, team, talent, and organizational impact outcomes. Fast learner who applies insights quickly and continually develops skills. Customer-centric, envisioning and co-creating solutions that meet customer needs.
