The transition towards renewable energy and decentralized energy resources (DER) is reshaping the power grid landscape, leading to the emergence of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). A VPP integrates various distributed energy generation units, adaptable energy consumers, and storage solutions, managing them as a cohesive entity to supply electricity to the grid or designated users. In this framework, utility companies and VPP managers depend on extensive communication networks to remotely oversee and coordinate diverse DER components, including renewable energy facilities, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and heat pumps.
As the importance of cyber resilience in this sector grows, VPP operators are increasingly recognizing the need to enhance the security of their systems. Cyber threats can severely disrupt operations, affect customer service, and jeopardize the stability of the power grid. Thus, it is crucial for VPP operators to possess effective tools and strategies to assess and elevate their cyber resilience capabilities.
We invite dedicated students interested in pursuing a challenging thesis focused on the cyber resilience of Virtual Power Plants (VPP). The research will center on the development, implementation, and assessment of a self-assessment framework specifically designed for the unique characteristics and needs of VPPs.
Key Responsibilities
Potential tasks may include:
- Comprehensive Literature Review: Conduct an in-depth review of existing definitions and metrics related to cyber resilience, analyzing current methodologies for measuring this critical aspect.
- Creation of a Cyber Resilience Model: Utilizing insights from the literature review, devise a novel approach for evaluating the cyber resilience of the IT infrastructure supporting VPPs. A key deliverable will be a quantification function that reflects essential attributes necessary for the operational integrity of a VPP, aligning with prominent European and international standards.
- Development of a Self-Assessment Tool: Based on findings from previous tasks, create a web-based tool enabling VPP operators to self-assess their cyber resilience. This will involve addressing technical aspects such as interfaces with various VPP components and data transmission protocols.
- Evaluation and Feedback Analysis: Assess the effectiveness and user-friendliness of the developed tool, gathering feedback from users. You will also analyze evaluation results to provide informed recommendations for further enhancements and optimizations.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Genuine interest in advancements in cyber resilience.
- Familiarity with energy systems and software development is a plus.
- Interest in interdisciplinary research areas, including cybersecurity engineering and usable security.
- Strong initiative and ability to work collaboratively.
- Proficient in German or English.
