Hamburg, Hamburg, Deutschland Universität Hamburg Vollzeit

Research Associate in Climate Modeling and Oceanography

Institution Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Earth System Sciences, Institute of Oceanography

Salary level

Start date Fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act.

Application deadline

Scope of work Part-time position

Weekly hours 75% of standard work hours per week

Your responsibilities

The role involves providing academic services for the aforementioned project. Research associates are encouraged to engage in independent research and pursue further academic qualifications, including doctoral studies, outside of their work commitments.

Responsibilities include contributing to the TRR 181, a DFG funded collaborative research center that collaborates with multiple German universities and research institutions to enhance the understanding and representation of energy transfers across various dynamical regimes in mathematical and numerical models.

The subproject L5 focuses on applying and evaluating the energetic mixing closure IDEMIX in climate scenarios significantly different from the present day. This initiative aims to explore an extreme future climate state devoid of the Earth's major ice sheets. By utilizing the internal wave model IDEMIX for consistent parameterization of wave-induced mixing, the project seeks to analyze the alterations in barotropic tidal currents associated with ice sheet melting and rising sea levels, and their effects on internal tide generation, propagation, and dissipation. The successful candidate will collaborate with the theoretical oceanography group at Universität Hamburg, under the guidance of Dr. Friederike Pollmann, Dr. Alexa Griesel, and Prof. Dr. Carsten Eden. There will also be opportunities for collaboration with Dr. Sophie-Berenice Wilmes from Bangor University, focusing on barotropic tidal modeling during these extreme climate conditions. Additionally, the candidate will be part of the project's research training group ENERGY, which connects participating universities and research institutions, offering specialized training courses, networking opportunities, and a mentoring program to support career advancement.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant discipline.

A completed M.Sc. or equivalent in physical oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or related fields.

A genuine interest in independent research within oceanography and numerical modeling, as well as in data analysis and the dissemination of scientific findings.

Candidates should possess excellent English language skills and thrive in an international and interdisciplinary team environment.

We offer

  • Reliable remuneration based on wage agreements
  • Opportunities for continuing education
  • University pension plans
