Your Role and Impact

As a Labor Relations Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting various employee and labor relations initiatives across Germany. Your expertise will foster constructive engagement with the works council, promote a culture of fairness, and provide valuable insights to business leaders and colleagues.

The Colleague & Labor Relations department (CLR) operates within the broader Human Resources framework at American Express. You will collaborate closely with business leaders, the Country Executive Team, and various departments, including Legal and Compliance.

Reporting to the Manager of Colleague and Labor Relations for Germany & Austria, your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading consultations with the works council on matters such as new IT system implementations, compensation strategies, organizational changes, and other initiatives.
  • Offering guidance on collective and individual labor law matters for Germany, with support for Austria as needed.
  • Developing and revising works council agreements, contract templates, and operational guidelines.
  • Overseeing local Health and Safety initiatives.
  • Identifying trends and proactively addressing needs within the business units.
  • Assisting in the management of disciplinary cases.
  • Engaging in global CLR projects and initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A university degree (Staatsexamen in law, L.L.M. in German labor or economic law) with a minimum of 4 years of experience in employee relations or as an HR generalist, and/or expertise in labor law.
  • In-depth knowledge of German collective and individual labor law.
  • Experience collaborating with German works councils, ideally in a complex multinational setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of engaging with all organizational levels.
  • A keen eye for detail while understanding broader implications of issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Fluency in both German and English, written and verbal.
