Our diverse international team of approximately 60 members hails from various countries, personal backgrounds, and professional fields, collaborating closely to further our mission. EMBO is located on the international EMBL life sciences research campus in Heidelberg, Germany.
Your role
As EMBO Sustainability Officer, you will join the EMBO Director’s Office. Recognising the need to acknowledge and foster efforts and practices that make life science research more sustainable, EMBO has started several initiatives, including the EMBO Lab Sustainability Award to recognise efforts to reduce the environmental and climate impact of laboratory practice. A second initiative focuses on the options for science funders to make an impact on sustainability in science. The Sustainability Officer will support the EMBO Director and other staff in furthering these initiatives and charting a way forward for EMBO activities in this field.
Reporting to the Director of EMBO, you will also work closely with members of the EMBO Policy team, as well as other programme heads and officers involved in sustainability activites.
Your main tasks will include:
- Coordinating activities around the EMBO Lab Sustainability Award, such as within the framework of the EMBO 60th Anniversary Meeting, as well as a dedicated workshop of the shortlisted award applicants and writing a report;
- Organizing a conference session on lab sustainability at the CellBio ASCB/EMBO Meeting in San Diego in December 2024;
- Carrying out follow-up work on the initiative launched by EMBO concerning the role of funders in promoting environmentally sustainable research;
- Creating a proposal for EMBO’s sustainability work going forward;
- Performing additional tasks
You have
- A PhD in the life sciences or a related field;
- Demonstrable expertise in sustainability activities related to scientific laboratories and institutions;
- Experience in project planning, execution, and management;
- Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders including scientists, funders, and policy-makers;
- A conscientious approach to work with attention to detail, flexible working style, and excellent organizational skills;
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Excellent written and oral English language skills.
You might also have
- Experience in scientific administration or science policy;
- Experience in drafting concept notes, guidelines, and other documents;
- Experience in organising workshops and events.
