The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups.
**Your tasks**: Development of food web models which are focused on the plants at the base of the food web, but take also higher trophic levels into account. Based on maps estimating the transport of particles (tracers and inertial particles) by hydrodynamic flows (ocean and atmospheric), network models shall be constructed between different locations on the globe. The goal is to unravel the differences between uni-directional (ocean flows) and bidirectional (diffusion) flows with respect to the survival of species which are passively transported with the flow. The comparison with data from macroecology will be done in close collaboration with scientists from the TU Munich and the University Göttingen.
**Requirements**: Qualifying academic university degree (Master or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) in Physics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics. A strong background in physics, particularly hydrodynamics and extended experience in computer programming with Matlab, Python, Julia or other higher programming languages is expected. Knowledge in population dynamics in space and time is desirable. Applicants should be open for interdisciplinary collaborations with biologists and ecologists.
