**Zuse Institute Berlin** - **research group “Computational Humanities”**:

- The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a non-university research institute under the public law of the state of Berlin. We conduct research and development in applied mathematics and computer science as well as the analysis and processing of complex data in conjunction with high-performance computing.

The position is part of the research project “Informing opinion dynamics models with online social network data” of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+. The main goal of this project is to develop a methodology that will help to overcome the gap between empirical studies and theoretical approaches for modeling dynamical changes of opinions through social influence during social interaction (personal, social networks). In particular, problems to be addressed include: (1) developing a new mathematical model for complex co-evolution of opinion and social dynamics; (2) obtaining qualitative understanding of opinion dynamics and co-evolving social dynamics in online media by integrating real-world data from empirical studies on Twitter; (3) advancing the study on model's basic analytical properties, such as long-term behaviour and mean-field models.

**Working field**:

- Development of new methods for mathematical modeling and simulation of opinion dynamics,
- Analysis and integration of several data sources to adapt the modelling to actual observed data,
- Derivations of reduced models given by PDE/SPDEs,
- Developing optimal control techniques,
- Implementation in Python or Matlab,
- Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals.

**Requirements**:

- Excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Physics or related disciplines,
- advanced knowledge in two or more of the following fields: probability theory, dynamical systems (modeling, stochastic processes), numerical mathematics, discrete mathematics,
- theoretical and practical experience in modelling and analysis of complex systems is of advantage,
- good programming skills, ideally in Matlab, Python, C, C++, or similar languages,
- excellent communication skills (writing and speaking) and working proficiency in English,
- Creativity, teamwork skills, high commitment and independence in dealing with research questions and problems.
