About you and this role

We are looking for you, an ambitious master’s student (M/F), to support our Energy & Environmental Operations department by doing a thesis (preferred) or an internship project in Investigate flocculation / precipitation behavior of varying raw water mix and alternatives to current flocculant for our location in Böhlen, Germany.

The department that will welcome you is Energy & Environmental Operations. It is a department responsible for the supply with power, fresh water, cooling water, demineralized water, different technical gases, and chemicals. Wastewater treatment belongs to the area of responsibilities as well.

Project description

At the Dow Böhlen site, raw water is processed into cooling tower make-up water and pre-decarbonized raw water (VER water) in the main waterworks. The applied technology combines mechanical and chemical treatment using various auxiliary materials and separation of solids by the process stages sedimentation and filtration. The VER water is then fed to the demineralization plant for further treatment.

In the past, various water sources with different qualitative characteristics were used in the main waterworks. Among other things, swamp water from the surrounding opencast mines and long-distance water using surface water direct from the river Weisse Elster and water from river Pleisse via a reservoir were used.

In recent years, only surface water from the White Elster and the Witznitz reservoir has been used as a source of raw water. In the main waterworks it is possible to use only one water source or a mixture of both types of raw water. Both types of water differ qualitatively.

**Responsibilities**:
As part of the internship project / master's thesis, the current mode of operation is to be evaluated based on a theoretical technology consideration and potential for improvement is to be identified with a focus on improving the delivery quality of the two types of water. In particular, the use of auxiliary materials for flocculation and precipitation should also be considered, starting from their suitability through their introduction into the process up to the optimal dosage. The seasonal fluctuations in raw water quality must also be taken into account.

On a laboratory scale, the optimal amounts of auxiliary materials used must be determined for the respective types of raw water and for selected mixing ratios, verified on the existing system if possible and a discussion of the results carried out.

**Qualifications**:

- You are currently studying for a master's degree or equivalent in process engineering, chemical engineering or environmental engineering
- You have a good working knowledge of German and English
- MS office skills
- Basic data analysis understanding required
- Good communication skills

You can start between May - July 2024 for a period of at least 6 months (exact timing to be discussed).
