The doctoral position is part of the RWI/IAB Junior Research Group "Ecological Transformation, Labour Market, Education and Training", which will start on 1 June 2024. The interdisciplinary junior research group is designed as an economic-sociological joint project between the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research in Essen and the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) with funds from the Interdisciplinary Social Policy Research Network (FIS). Both the IAB and the RWI have an additional doctoral position to fill (economics).
The junior research group works on the effects of the ecological transformation on the demand for labour, on employment patterns, on inequality in the context of income and regions, and on social policy. It also deals with adaptation processes in the course of the ecological transformation and with solutions for a just climate policy. Special attention is also paid to the role of education and training in the transformation and its potential to help meeting the changing demand for skilled labour. The IAB offers excellent conditions for a doctorate in the respective discipline, with a strong international network of experts at university and non-university institutions, educational opportunities through the IAB Graduate Programme, and individual support. Additionally, the unique research data infrastructure of the IAB is available to support your research. Depending on your research question, you will have access to administrative process data from the Federal Employment Agency, data from IAB surveys, occupational data, job advertisement data, and geo-referenced data. The research results are to be presented by the doctoral students at international conferences and published in highly ranked international journals. In addition, the results will be prepared for politicians and the public and disseminated in talks, reports and internet articles and social media posts. The project also includes a teaching programme for universities, which serves to communicate the results achieved to students and to further qualify the scientists involved. The position requires a Master's degree in sociology or a related field and the willingness to complete a doctorate in sociology during the project period. Ideally, you have advanced knowledge in the field of empirical labour market research, labour market sociology and occupational sociology. In addition, you have in-depth knowledge of at least one of the statistical software environments R, Python and Stata. You also have in-depth knowledge of survey design and survey statistics in a research field relevant to the junior research group. In-depth knowledge of educational and/or environmental sociology is also desirable. Basic knowledge of state-of-the-art methods for the empirical identification of causal effects is also expected. Basic knowledge of data science and an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration in data science sub-projects of the junior research group, e.g. in the field of natural language processing, machine learning, generative AI approaches and/or geospatial data processing, are advantageous. We also expect a strong interest in the interactions between ecological transformation and the sociological dimensions of the labour market. IAB is offering the successful applicant the chance to work in a dynamic research environment with a strong impact on economic policy consulting. This is a fixed-term full-time position (part-time possible), with the possibility of further extensions. The remuneration is according to the Federal Employment Agency’s statutory salary scale and its associated benefits. Remuneration corresponds to at least TE II, Level 1 (currently about 4.700 € gross earnings for a full-time position). With a completed doctorate or with at least two peer-reviewed publications (with two co-authored publications corresponding to one single authored publication), remuneration amounts at least to TE I, Level 1 (currently 5.200 € gross earnings for a full-time position).
