The **Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Institute of Automation, **the **Chair of**
**Process Control Systems **offers a project position as
**Research Associate** (M/F/x)***
starting at the **earliest possible date**. The position is within the research project EnSort - "Increasing
energy efficiency in the waste and recycling material sorting process by increasing the degree of
automation" and is initially limited until September 30, 2025. The period of employment is governed
by - 2 (2) Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The
project aims to increase the recycling rate and improve the energy efficiency of the processes in highly
complex waste sorting plants. For this purpose, digital twins are developed on the basis of the
combination of process modelling and machine learning.
**Tasks**: Development of the digital twin of the entire recycling plant based on mechanistic and hybrid
modeling approaches:
- conducting workshops with industry partners for requirements analysis
- process systems engineering analysis and description of the structure of the existing sorting
- plant- mechanistic modeling as well as hybrid mechanistic and data-driven modeling of the
- subsystems (e.g., based on population balances)- system identification based on design of experiments, model discrimination and parameter
- identification- simulation-based optimization of plant operation
- coordination of research results with our academic and industry partners and publication at
international conferences and in recognized scientific journals.
**Requirements**:
- above-average university degree in the field of process engineering, waste management,
- chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or related fields- good knowledge of process systems engineering modeling and simulation
- initial experience with modeling software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, Aspen Dynamics, and
- gPROMS)- independent, goal
- and solution-oriented way of working
- interdisciplinary and team-oriented thinking
- confident command of the German and English languages, both written and spoken.
- Knowledge of modeling and simulation of mechanical separation processes in waste
management desirable.
