Research Associate / Postdoc (M/F/x)

starting May 01, 2023. The position is limited to three years. The period of employment is governed by - 2 (2) Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG).
The Chair of Forest Zoology is led by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Seibold and consists of a motivated, international team of researchers from different ecological and zoological disciplines. The position to be filled will be the key postdoc position within the BIOCOMP project “Consequences of global biodiversity loss and climate change for decomposer communities and implications for forest carbon fluxes” which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant). Within the project, interactive effects of climate and land use on decomposer biodiversity (insects and microbes) and wood decomposition will be studied in a global experiment. Empirical results will be used to model carbon fluxes from wood decomposition at the global scale and to generate projections of carbon fluxes under different scenarios of forest use and climate change. Further experiments will be conducted both in the field and in climate chambers to study interactions between wood-decomposing microbes and insects and to unravel the mechanisms behind the climate-dependency of biodiversity-decomposition relationships.

**Working field**:

- organization of the global decomposition experiment and the biodiversity assessment
- statistical analyses of the generated decomposition and biodiversity data
- modelling analyses of global carbon fluxes under climate change and land use scenarios
- writing of scientific publications
- data management
- co-supervision of two PhD-students.

**Requirements**:

- university (Master or equivalent degree) and PhD degree in ecology, biology, forest science, environmental sciences or related disciplines
- strong research background in forest ecology, preferably in the field of biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research, mycology, entomology or ecosystem modelling
- solid publication record in ISI-journals
- experience in organizing large field campaigns (e.g. biodiversity assessments, ecosystem processes)
- experience in managing large datasets
- in-depth knowledge of statistical methods for analyzing biodiversity and ecosystem process data using R
- ability and willingness to conduct field work, also under unfavorable conditions (e.g. high humidity or steep terrain)
- strong team spirit and communication skills (English)
- Favorably, experience in ecosystem modelling and a valid driver’s license for cars (category B).
