The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.

In the research group

Laser Dynamics

(Head: PD Dr. Uwe Bandelow)** starting at the earliest possible date.**

**The work tasks include**:

- Investigation of nonlinear effects in optical fibers: derivation of the model equations, studies on modulation instability, ultrashort pulses, optical turbulence, and extreme waves.
- Support of a collaboration between WIAS and the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science at the University of Sydney.
- Presentation of the results on national and international conferences as well as publication in scientific journals.
- A completed scientific university education in the field of physics or mathematics with good grades
- Ability to work on a theoretical project. Experience with Maxwell equations, nonlinear Schrödinger equation, modeling of optical systems, or nonlinear dynamics is an advantage
- Experience with models based on partial differential equations and their numerical treatment. Provable knowledge of, e.g., Matlab, Python, C/C++, Mathematica is an advantage.
- Good English and communications skills.

**Zu den Arbeitsaufgaben gehören**:

- Untersuchung von nichtlinearen Effekten in optischen Fasern: Entwicklung der Modellgleichungen, Untersuchung von Modulationsinstabilität, ultrakurzer Pulse, optischer Turbulenz und Monsterwellen
- Implementation und Anwendung von numerischen Methoden zur Lösung der Modellgleichungen, wie z.B. von Split-Operator-Methoden
- Unterstützung einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen WIAS und dem Institut für Photonik und optische Wissenschaften an der Universität von Sydney
- Präsentation der Ergebnisse auf nationalen und internationalen Konferenzen sowie Publikation in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften

**Wir suchen**: Kandidat*innen mit
- einer abgeschlossenen wissenschaftlichen Hochschulausbildung in Physik oder Mathematik mit gutem Studienabschluss
- der Fähigkeit, an einem theoretischen Projekt zu arbeiten. Erfahrungen mit Maxwell-Gleichungen, nichtlineare Schrödinger Gleichung, Modellierung optischer Systeme oder nichtlinearer Dynamik sind von Vorteil
- Erfahrung mit Modellen auf der Basis von partiellen Differentialgleichungen und ihrer numerischen Lösung. Nachgewiesene Kenntnisse in z.B. Matlab, Python, C/C++, Mathematica sind von Vorteil
- Guten Englisch
- und Kommunikationskenntnissen
