The European XFEL is a world leading FEL user facility which offers a wide variety of special photon delivery modes. The longitudinal phase space of the electron beam is of crucial importance to both the FEL process itself and these special operation modes. This project aims at improving the required diagnostic by aggregating the existing diagnostic capabilities and utilise ML learning techniques to address their limitations. The work itself will be carried out under the umbrella of the virtual FEL R&D group at DESY with strong interactions to various groups at both EuXFEL and within DESY.
- About your role:
- Responsible for aggregating the data from various existing diagnostic devices, including data cleaning
- Utilise physics and ML approaches to further increase the resolution of the diagnostic
- Within a team, implement and deploy a mixed diagnostic server giving online feedback to the machine operators in real time
- Share insights and results through presentations, reports and publications
- Support daily operation of the facility as an operator

- About you:
- PhD in physics, computer science or related field, background in accelerator physics or ML is desired
- Proficiency in programming languages and frameworks commonly used in machine learning
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret experimental results, identify discrepancies with theoretical models, and propose improvements
- Knowledge of accelerators, control systems and relevant simulation tools (Elegant/Genesis/Oscelot) are a beneficial
- Good command of English, German is beneficial
