The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). **The work tasks include**:
The researcher will work on the theoretical aspects of the collaborative project “Excellence in Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers," which aims to develop a new generation of high-power, high-quality semiconductor emitters. The basic theoretical model used for the simulation and analysis of PCSELs is given by a system of PDEs defined in 1 (temporal) and 2 (spatial) dimensions. For more advanced modeling, it will be necessary to consider the selected model components in all three spatial dimensions. It is expected that under the supervision of the experts from WIAS and FBH, the researcher will work on the development of efficient numerical tools suited for solving numerically the dynamical PDE model and the related spectral problem.

**We are looking for**: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in mathematics, scientific computing, or theoretical physics and have good speaking and writing skills in English. Experience in efficient numerical methods for PDEs and good programming skills in Julia and/or C++ are expected; knowledge of semiconductor device modeling and semiconductor physics would be an advantage.

Die Stelle wird für einen Zeitraum von bis zu 24 Monaten im Rahmen des Leibniz-Exzellenzprogramms gefördert. Das Forschungsthema ist eine theoretische und numerische Untersuchung von Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Halbleiterlasern (PCSELs). Es wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Physikern und Elektroingenieuren des Ferdinand-Braun
- Instituts (FBH) in Berlin durchgeführt.

**Zu den Arbeitsaufgaben gehören**:
Der/die Bewerber/in wird an den theoretischen Aspekten des Verbundprojekts „Excellence in Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers“ arbeiten, das auf die Entwicklung einer neuen Generation von Hochleistungs-Halbleiter-Emittern von hoher Qualität abzielt. Das grundlegende theoretische Modell für die Simulation und Analyse von PCSELs ist ein System von PDEs, das in einer (zeitlichen) und zwei (räumlichen) Dimensionen definiert ist. Für fortgeschrittene Modellierung wird es notwendig sein die ausgewählten Modellkomponenten in allen drei räumlichen Dimensionen zu berücksichtigen. Es wird erwartet, dass der/die Bewerber/in unter der Aufsicht der Experten des WIAS und des FBH an der Entwicklung effizienter numerischer Verfahren arbeitet, die für die numerische Lösung des dynamischen PDE-Modells und des damit verbundenen spektralen Problems geeignet sind.

**Wir suchen**: Kandidat*innen mit einem Doktorgrad im Fach Mathematik, wissenschaftliches Rechnen oder theoretische Physik und guten Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift. Wir erwarten Erfahrung in effizienten numerischen Methoden für PDEs und gute Programmierkenntnisse in Julia und/oder C++; Kenntnisse in der Modellierung von Halbleiterbauelementen und in der Halbleiterphysik sind von Vorteil.
