Many environmentally triggered lung diseases are still considered incurable. The Institute of Lung Health and Immunity explores the immunological mechanisms underlying chronic lung diseases such as COPD, lung fibrosis, asthma, lung cancer and the complications following lung transplantation. Innate immune memory is a type of immune response that occurs in almost all higher organisms. This type of defense response represents a long-term modulation of the immune system in response to a pathogen, or other stressors, enabling a more effective response to a future attack.

We aim to understand the molecular pathways involved in human trained immunity. Special focus lies on the signaling function of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in innate immunity and how these molecules regulate metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming during the training phase.

Your mission
- Unravelling the signaling function of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/NO) in trained immunity
- Identifying the sources and targets of ROS and NO
- Characterizing redox-regulated nuclear pathways and investigating redox-regulated epigenetic processes in trained immunity
- Analyzing the activation of trained immunity in remotely located cells/tissues/organs
- Developing a controlled activation of trained immunity

Your qualifications
- Master degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biotechnology or equivalent fields
- Basic experience in at least two of the following areas: Redox-biochemistry, epigenetics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, structural biology
- Experience in chromatin analysis, e.g. ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, WGBS, histone modifications
- Strong motivation, resilience, scientific curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence

Remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective wage agreement for public-sector employees at federal level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance if the necessary conditions are fulfilled. The position is (initially) limited to three years, but under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
