**Internship title: Re-entry footprints in Low Earth Orbit disposal scenarios**
The design of future LEO satellites to be operated by EUMETSAT, notably of Metop-SG satellites, foresees an end-of-life disposal via a direct controlled re-entry. In the case of Metop-SG satellites, the idea is to perform a series of Hohmann transfers to lower the orbit, initially at about 800 km altitude, until a sufficiently low orbit perigee (400 to 250 km) from which a very last burn would bring the perigee further down to a sub-atmospheric altitude, forcing re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. A long last manoeuvre of about 30 minutes is required about half an orbit before re-entry. The target area for re-entry is normally the so-called South Pacific Ocean uninhabited area. Under a number of hypothesis, mainly re-entry orbit (after last burn), materials and fragmentation model, the surviving objects upon re-entry would fall on Earth over an along-track dispersion, or footprint, which is sufficiently small to target the re-entry area with margins.
The main element of the project shall be to perform simulations, with dedicated tool for this purpose, to assess the impact footprint variability to a number of initial parameters (solar activity, apogee, targeted perigee, assumed break-up altitude).

- Familiarization with controlled re-entry scenarios in EUMETSAT missions, notably for Metop-SG satellites;

- Definition of target scenarios and initial variables that would impact re-entry footprints;
- Perform dedicated sensitivity analyses on previously identified scenarios to assess re-entry footprint variability;
- Document and synthesize results accordingly in a document report and an end-of-internship presentation;
- In addition, the intern will support relevant day-to-day activities within the team.

The internships are open to bachelor and master students with mandatory internship requirements in relevant disciplines such as mathematics, applied sciences or studies covering orbit mechanics.
**LANGUAGES**:
The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. It is necessary to be able to work effectively in English.

**Skills and Experience**:

Additional specific requirements:
- Knowledge of orbit mechanics;
- Familiarity with Linux systems would be desired.
**Employment Conditions**:
Length of internship**: 3 months**
Anticipated start date**: April 2023**
No salary is paid to interns who are still in studies, however a daily allowance and contribution to travel / accommodation costs may be provided. The conditions will be established taking into account the requirements and policy of the intern’s educational institution.
Interns are responsible for providing their own health and accident insurance and for finding their own accommodation in Darmstadt.
