**Internship title: Optical analysis of meteorological satellite imager in-orbit acquisitions**

Satellite optical sensors and their processing chains are designed to fulfil specifications on their optical performances. These performances include the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), a measure of the focus, and the stray light which is the measured polluting light not intended in the optical design.

The pre-launch performances are established on-ground by a mix of simulations and measurements. It is relevant to confirm these estimates once in-orbit, also considering that they may evolve with time. This can be done by adequate processing and analyses of various in-orbit acquisitions such as Earth, Deep Space and Moon.

The internship activities will consist of supporting the estimation of several missions in-orbit performances and the tuning of the ground processing to optimize these performances at Level-1.

This internship will provide the intern with the possibility to learn about the specification and assessment of some key optical instrument performances. The intern will be embedded in a team of instrument and calibration experts and will take part to their exciting activities on the MTG-I1 FCI commissioning in 2023. The in-orbit testing and monitoring are key activities for every mission. The intern will also be exposed to the processing of the satellite measurements into radiance products, both by prototypes and operational processors.

**Duties**:
The main tasks of the internship would be:

- Familiarisation with the MTF metric, in-field/out-of-field stray light artefacts and with the methods to measure them.
- Familiarisation with the EUMETSAT technical computing environment.
- Familiarisation with the access and reading of relevant satellite Level-1 products.
- Participate to the analysis of MTG FCI in-orbit measurements to characterise the stray light and MTF performances.
- Participate to the analysis of the impact of defocusing of the MSG SEVIRI instrument on its MTF.
- Contribute to the definition of a strategy to homogenise the MTF of Sentinel-3 OLCI and SLSTR in the context of a synergy product re-gridded to a common grid.

The internships are open to master students with mandatory internship requirements in relevant disciplines such as physics, remote sensing, aerospace engineering, optics.

**LANGUAGES**:
The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. It is necessary to be able to work effectively in English.

**Duties**:

**Skills and Experience**:

- A good knowledge of Python and be familiar with Linux environment.
- A good knowledge of the concepts of optical imaging is an asset, as well as familiarity with optical satellite instruments.
- Have the ability to work effectively in English;
- Be computer literate;
- Be able to work independently and collaboratively;
- Have the ability to take the initiative in researching ideas;
- Have the ability to collect, collate, conceptualize and present information clearly.

**Employment Conditions**:
Length of internship**: 6 months**
Anticipated start date**: March 2023**

No salary is paid to interns who are still in studies, however a daily allowance and contribution to travel / accommodation costs may be provided. The conditions will be established taking into account the requirements and policy of the intern’s educational institution.

Interns are responsible for providing their own health and accident insurance and for finding their own accommodation in Darmstadt.
