The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The research group "Applied Tumor Immunity" at the DKFZ with its close connection to the clinic is actively integrating clinical data with biomarker exploration and functional assays to understand and overcome mechanisms of resistance in immuno-oncology.

Immunotherapy led to a paradigm change of systemic tumor therapy. Many patients now benefit from improved survival rate and sometimes cure. However, there is an urgent need to further improve immunotherapy, as a majority of patients will progress despite treatment. Recent preclinical translational and clinical studies demonstrate that the patient's gut microbiome is a major determinant of response to immunotherapy and highlight the potential of microbiome intervention in immuno-oncology.

Main goal of the project is to conduct an exploratory biomarker study in clinical cohorts and delineate mechanisms of gut-related immunotherapy failure in preclinical mouse models. Main tasks are wet lab activities to obtain metagenomics, transcriptomic, high-dimensional flow cytometry data in the context of clinical outcomes and conducting mouse experiments. Close interaction with bioinformaticians to support an integrated analysis of the multiomics is provided.

**Job description**:
Your responsibilities:

- Design and plan a research project under the guidance of the principal investigator
- Conduct experiments, data collection, and data analysis as outlined in the research plan
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to gain an in-depth understanding of the research area and identify knowledge gaps
- Collaborate with biostatisticians or data analysts to interpret and analyse complex data sets
- Assist in writing research reports, conference abstracts, and scientific papers
- Present and discuss experimental results in the group, the institution and externally
- Collaborate with other team members to contribute to ongoing research efforts
- Supervision of PhD, MD and Master students
- Maintain regular communication with supervisors and provide progress updates

**Requirements**:

- Master's degree and PhD (or equivalent) in cancer biology, immunology, microbiology, or related disciplines
- Strong background in molecular and cellular biology techniques, including high-dimensional flow cytometry, gene expression analysis, cell culture and microbiology
- Experience in data analysis
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Experience in animal experimentation
- Excellent English language skills
- Enthusiasm for working in an ambitious, multidisciplinary research group
- High motivation and strong interest in gut immunology and onco-immunology and the drive to contribute to scientific advancements
