**What's the role?**:
We are looking for highly talented and highly motivated students in the fields of data modelling, computer science and security to do evaluation of different data encoding formats for end-to-end communication between tool and cloud.
Start date is flexible to the student's availability, duration for at least 3 months (preferably 6+ months).

**What does the role involve?**:
In this internship, you will evaluate solutions for end-to-end data encoding formats with a proof-of-concept:
- Review existing literature about industry standard data encoding formats for IoT;
- Work with Edge Computing and IT departments in Hilti to define the concept for end-to-end data flow between Tool and Cloud, via different gateways;
- Implement a proof of concept on embedded development platform.
You will investigate different data encoding formats; how do they compare with each other and develop a proof-of-concept to answers questions like:
- What is the minimum RAM and processor power needed on embedded devices to implement these?
- Which open-source libraries can we use?
- What is the overhead of these different encoding formats on the size of message from tool to cloud?
The Edge Computing department in Hilti Business Unit Tool Services is working on hardware and software solutions for IoT use-cases in the construction industry. An essential element in IoT is the data flow between Tool and Cloud. Our challenge is to find an appropriate solution for encoding this data that is suitable for low power embedded devices with limited computing power and internet connectivity and can also support future requirements of end-to-end security for the communication between Tool and Cloud.

**What you need is**:
- Student in Computer Science, Embedded Software, Embedded Systems or similar field of study
- Interest in Internet of Things, Data models and IoT Efficient encoding formats
- Willingness to take responsibility and work independently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
- Fluency in spoken and written English and German
