**Investigation of aqueous amines for CO2 absorption from the atmosphere and flue gases at Carbon Atlantis.**

**What is the context?**

Reducing atmospheric CO2 concentrations to stay within 1.5-2°C of global warming will require 5-15 gigatons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere annually by 2050. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are expected to be a major factor contributing to this goal. Direct air carbon capture (DACC) is one of the most promising concepts for the large-scale removal of CO2 from the air. DACC technologies utilize large ventilators combined with a liquid or solid absorbent to capture CO2 and subsequent thermal treatment desorb CO2.

**What do we work on?**

Electrochemical CO2 capture technologies are gaining attention due to their flexibility, scalability, fit in an electrified industry, and overall energy use of < 1.0 MWh/t-CO2. Most of these methods rely on the concept of ‘‘pH-swing’’ and its effect on the CO2 hydration/dehydration equilibrium. CO2 can be captured and recovered through a pH swing by shifting a working fluid's pH between acidic and basic pH. The hydrogen looping approach is the most promising among the pH-swing technologies, since it requires off-the-shelf materials and can operate at comparably high current densities and low operating voltages. Carbon Atlantis filed three patents on a novel hydrogen looping process for pH-swing using 600 kWh/t CO2. However, the absorption, desorption, and electrochemical unit process have only been proven separately.
