Doctoral Project Opportunity

**Your Job**:
The main objective of the project is the development of affordable, long-term stable corrosion resistant coatings especially for the anode side of the PEM electrolysis. To achieve this an in-depth characterization of the deposited coatings and the formed oxide scales will be performed. A combinatoric approach will allow a fast optimization. The project will be jointly supervised by experts form the institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK-1: Materials Synthesis and Processing) and the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C-2: Materials Science and Technology).
Your tasks will include
- development of the PVD coating process using different targets especially of refractory metals to deposit layers with defined locally varying compositions
- in depth characterization of the coatings by high resolution techniques especially using FIB and TEM
- corrosion of the deposited coatings under conditions close to these at the anode in PEM electrolysis
- development of high-throughput set-up to measure local conductivities by impedance spectroscopy, performing measurements
- detailed microstructural characterization of the grown oxide films, establish correlation with conductivity data
- performing additional in situ corrosion tests in a liquid cell TEM holder
- sum-up results in quarterly reports and papers and finally in the PhD thesis
**Your Profile**:
- Excellent master degree or comparable in mechanical engineering, physics or materials science
- Knowledge in ceramics, coating technologies and/or advanced materials characterization are beneficial
- A high degree of independence combined with large engagement is expected
- Very reliable and conscientious working style
- Good English capabilities and preferably good knowledge of German
- Strong motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree within four years in an ambitious, but rewarding interdisciplinary project related to hydrogen economy
