**About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)**
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.
**About the Position**
Under the direction of the Second Secretary - Bilateral Relations, the Energy Officer is responsible for assisting in the furthering of Australia’s energy cooperation with Germany, with a strong focus on the hydrogen partnership. The role will also on occasion support other science and technology engagement, including on critical minerals.
The role provides policy research and support relevant to energy cooperation and science and technology engagement; assists in the delivery of events; requires building and maintaining Embassy contacts and networks; and supports the Embassy’s social media accounts.
**The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to**:
Policy research and support
- Provide policy support on energy, with a particular focus on hydrogen, to the broader political/economic team, including through policy research on relevant topics relating to German energy policy and bilateral relations between Australia and Germany.
- Analyse and provide advice as required on aspects of German energy policy.
- Provide policy support and conduct research and analysis on broader science and technology policy and cooperation, or other tasks as required by the Political-Economic team.
Events, visits, and social media
- Prepare, organise, and assist with the planning, operational and logistic elements of events such as embassy functions, receptions and other forms of official hospitality as related to energy and science and technology cooperation.
- Support visits by embassy staff and members or Australian ministers and senior officials by assisting with event planning, logistics, appointments, and other elements of visit programs as related to energy cooperation.
- Support the development and maintenance of Embassy networks as relevant to energy policy, and specifically the Australia-Germany hydrogen partnership.
- Assist with content development for the Embassy’s social media accounts (currently Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and the Embassy website) and those of key embassy stakeholders relevant to energy policy.
- Engage with DFAT headquarters, other Australian agencies and departments, Australian Embassies in Europe, and relevant business, academic and diplomatic stakeholders in support of Australia’s energy cooperation with Germany, in particular the hydrogen partnership.
**Qualifications/Experience**
- High level written and spoken English communication skills.
- Strong research and analysis skills.
- Experience working on energy policy and issues.
- Strong organisational skills and an ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work well independently within a small and busy team.
- Strong capacity to exercise discretion and judgement and excellent attention to detail.

A. Demonstrated knowledge of energy policy in Germany, including hydrogen energy, and an understanding of Australian/German bilateral ties.
B. Excellent organisational and project management skills, including the ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and show initiative.
C. Ability to independently conduct high quality, thorough and accurate research, from a variety of sources, including data, analyse findings to monitor trends, and present findings/reports to a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders in an appropriate manner.
D. Ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills, including building, and maintaining a strong network and effective stakeholder relations.
E. Experience organising events, functions or tradeshows, and the ability to effectively represent your organisation at these events.
