The job

The capacity of freshwater resources to maintain biodiversity and provide essential ecosystem functions has been exceeded in many places following human impacts. While previous control-impact studies provided valuable evidence of how humans impacted streams, freshwater management lacks science-based thresholds that mark the transition from an ecosystem capable of human impacts to one where functions may be irreversibly impacted. Such functional thresholds mark the lower boundary of a "safe operating space" (SOS) for a given function and may allow for a certain degree of human activity. The Thematic Area "**Water Resources and Environment**" at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research-UFZ offers two project positions in the project "**Safe operating spaces for stream ecosystem functioning**", which combines meta-analysis with fieldwork and hydro-ecological modeling in a theory-driven approach.
