**The job**:
In aquatic ecosystems, nutrient cycling is a crucial ecosystem function. Both, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) are essential nutrients for aquatic biota and usually phosphorus is the limiting nutrient for biomass growth in freshwaters. In excess, nitrogen and phosphorus cause eutrophication whis is recognized as an environmental concern across Europe since the late 1980s and continues to be a challenge nowadays. Understanding nutrient uptake heterogeneity in aquatic ecosystems requires a prior breakdown of the processes involved. In contrast to nitrogen, phosphorus is not completely removed from the aquatic ecosystem but it is immobilized from one compartment (i.e., water) to another (i.e., riverbed substrates and/or biota). However, the knowledge behind the biological mechanisms of P retention in aquatic ecosystems is still limited.
Phosphorus entrapment in microbial biomass can occur both in planktonic and in benthic communities. Benthic communities develop in riverbed substrates forming a consortium of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms embedded in an extracellular polymeric matrix (EPS), known as biofilms. Biofilms play a key role on river self-purification by catalising relevant ecological processes such as mineralization of organic matter and nutrient storage and transformation. Benthic biofilms have a competitive advantage in P entrapment since, unlike planktonic communities, they can accumulate P through not only intracellular but also extracellular pathways. However, the patterns of intracellular and extracellular P entrapment in fluvial aquatic ecosystems are still an unknown.
The main objective is to disentangle how the combination of autotrophic and heterotrophic energy sources (i.e., light and DOM) determine the dominance of intracellular and extracellular phosphorus entrapment in biofilms and their link to carbon and phosphorus metabolic profiles in biofilms. It ultimately aims to explain patterns of P entrapment and P use efficiencies in river ecosystems.
