Bremerhaven, Bremen, Deutschland Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung Vollzeit
Job Description

We are seeking a skilled professional to focus on high-resolution sea ice modeling in preparation for and execution of innovative kilometer-scale climate simulations.

Your Tasks
  • Prepare the FESOM sea ice model for integration into the next version of the IFS-FESOM coupled model.
  • Extend the model's functionality by implementing advanced sea ice thermodynamics for coupled simulations.
  • Conduct high-resolution simulations with the updated sea ice model.
  • Contribute to the development of an AI-based emulator for the high-resolution sea ice model.

You will collaborate with leading European climate modelers, computational scientists, and software engineers to develop Digital Twins of the climate system, supporting climate change adaptation efforts.

About the Position

This position involves preparing the sea ice component of the climate modeling system for the next, more advanced version. Key responsibilities include optimizing ocean-sea ice coupling, adapting advanced thermodynamics (based on ICEPACK) for coupled simulations, and conducting ocean-sea ice and atmosphere-ocean-sea ice simulations.

In this role, you will work closely with model developers to evaluate simulations scientifically or optimize the system's computational performance. Additionally, you will support the development of an AI-based emulator for the sea ice model.

Your Profile

To be successful in this position, you should have:

  • A master's degree in oceanography, climate sciences, meteorology, mathematics, physics, software engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with *nix systems.
  • Excellent English language skills.

Familiarity with geophysical models, sea ice physics, developing sea ice models, unstructured grid models, HPC systems, FORTRAN, and other programming languages is highly desirable.
