The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,500 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

The GFZ Section 4.2 “Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling” in the Department 4 “Geosystems” hosts the Program Office of the International Continental Scientific Program (ICDP), including the ICDP Operational Support Group and the ICDP Executive Directorate. The mandate of ICDP is to provide funding and support to multinational teams of scientists for implementing and realizing scientific drilling projects on land around the globe. Since its foundation in 1996, almost 60 scientific drilling projects on six continents have been executed and completed with ICDP support and co-funding and more than 80 ICDP workshops have been held.
