The Group Investment Management (GIM) division is responsible for managing the proprietary Munich Re and ERGO investment portfolio of around €240bn.
We are looking for an accomplished leader for the role of the Head of Group Investment Steering. The business unit responsibilities are divided in three departments: Investment Steering Primary Insurance LH and Investment Steering Reinsurance & P/C and Investment Steering PI International. This role reports into the Group CIO and acts as a key advisor for the various Boards of Management of the Munich Re Group's legal entities.

YOUR JOB
  • Management of three highly specialized departments and additional direct reports, active support for the development of the highly qualified department heads (ML2) and direct reports.
  • Overall steering responsibility for the investment contribution of all primary insurance and reinsurance companies of Munich Re Group; ensuring operational excellence to meet business model-specific and corporate strategy requirements based on outstanding expertise in asset liability management and investment instruments.
  • Advising the legal entity management boards on the assessment of liability-driven and general strategic requirements imposed on investments.
  • Transfer of the requirements for investments into an allocation-suitable rulebook (ALM framework) which feeds into the next steps of the investment process i.e., SAA and TAA.
  • Operating the decision-making processes for the investment strategy of the companies as far as GIM is concerned; in particular, balancing the economic and market-oriented view with the period-related earnings requirements (local GAAP, IFRS) and regulatory framework/ constraints.
  • Derivation and issuing of asset class mandates to MEAG and other asset managers as well as their management during the year; implementation of the allocation impulses from SAA and TAA in the portfolios with responsibility for IFRS- and local GAAP-results.
  • Responsible risk manager for investments i.e., steering the asset side of the company in risk situations and corresponding communication with the executive committees in the event of escalation.
  • Development or review of investment vehicles and investment concepts with regard to the economic and accounting requirements of the companies.
  • Taking care of the interests of the investment function at the interfaces to the segment and cross-sectional divisions; special focus on stakeholder management at Legal Entity, ERGO and MR Group level regarding ALM and investment management; involvement in strategic projects (including operational and methodological support for M&A and PMI projects).
  • Contribution to the value and risk-oriented management approaches/ set of management rules for the Life and Health companies regarding investments; analysing the effects on company values and risk capital.
  • Provision of investment planning (IFRS, HGB) for the MR Reinsurance Group.
  • Special services for the MR Reinsurance Group: oversight of global cash management as well as collateral management for the reinsurance contracts and alternative investments.
  • Provision of a centre of competence for the development of investment kernels in long-term savings products and for asset-based insurance concepts.
  • Representation of MR/ERGO interests in industry and actuarial associations ensuring appropriate participation in the discussion of supervisory regulations and their influence on business models as well as adherence of management systems to regulatory requirements.
  • Representation of MR/ERGO interests in industry bodies and (actuarial) committees.   • Develop talents within GIM and contribute to the groupwide diversity and inclusion objectives.
YOUR PROFILE
  • Successfully completed studies with a quantitative orientation, preferably a university degree in economics, mathematics, physics or equivalent.
  • Significant professional experience in the actuarial management of an international insurance company or the treasury of an international bank, with longer professional experience abroad desirable.
  • Several years of management experience with executives, experience as head of major projects is desired.
  • Entrepreneurial, analytical and strategic thinking with a strong focus on results, risk awareness, taking responsibility and decisiveness.
  • Exceptional innovative ability and constant willingness to learn.
  • Excellent communication skills, high level of social competence and persuasiveness combined with assertiveness and conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Reliable handling of investment steering concepts and risk measurement and management approaches as well as their implementation in the insurance industry - in particular of Solvency II, value and risk-oriented management and the associated risk management processes.
  • Expert knowledge of international capital markets and their investment instruments as well as quantitative company models.
  • In-depth knowledge of (international) commercial law and regulatory framework (including international and local accounting standards) for investments of insurance companies.
  • Solid actuarial and accounting understanding of all insurance lines and the corresponding insurance products, embedded in a broad international orientation.
  • Clear and convincing team-spirited communicator who is fluent in English.
  • Outstanding leadership competence:
    • Ability to lead and motivate highly qualified and diverse teams in a global setup
    • In depth experience in guiding teams through transition phases and changes
    • Energetic manager who can build and empower teams in an agile way and apply their diverse skills, perspectives and experiences to achieve common goals
    • Proven track record in attracting and developing colleagues through coaching
