Duties and Responsibilities


The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 140 Governments (see ) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the guidance of the IPBES secretariat's Head of Work Programme (responsibilities 1-4 below) and Head of Communications (responsibilities 5-6 below), the Graphic Design Expert will: 1.

Design and layout (a) the summary for policymakers and (b) the assessment report of the IPBES "nexus assessment"; 2.

Design and layout (a) the summary for policymakers and (b) the assessment report of the IPBES "transformative change assessment"; 3.

Design and layout fact sheets for (a) the nexus assessment and (b) the transformative change assessment; 4. Provide the initial design and illustrations for the summary for policymakers of the IPBES "business and biodiversity assessment"; 5.

Design and layout communications and branding materials in relation to the IPBES-11 Plenary and the media launch of the nexus and transformative change assessment reports.

Design and layout, where applicable, additional items, including, inter alia, pull-up banners; brochures, posters, and other miscellaneous branding and outreach elements.

Qualifications/special skills


An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Graphic Design, Communications, Public Information, Journalism, Marketing or a related field is required.

A first-level degree with two additional years of directly relevant experience may be excepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


  • At least ten years of experience is required in graphical design work that covers the areas outlined under the roles and responsibilities section;
  • Good organizational and personal management skills are required, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable;
  • Experience in working with national or global scientific assessment processes is required; and
  • Knowledge and professional design experience of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters is required.
Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required.
