The job
The position offered at the Department of Ecological Modelling should be filled from 01.09.2024 and is currently limited until 30.09.2025 with an option of extension for another 2 years, dependent on the availability of funding.
The Helmholtz Association financially supports the establishment of an Excellence Network (BN-EXN) at the UFZ. Main aim is the elaboration of a digital twin for predicting the vitality of pollinators in landscapes under climate risks and transformative land use change. Its core is the individual-based honeybee model BEEHAVE the complexity of which hinders nation-wide vitality assessments. Therefore, the candidate shall apply cutting-edge methods from machine learning to develop an aggregated emulator (meta-model) which subsumes the essence of the BEEHAVE model. Furthermore, general competence on linking simulation models and ML by incorporating causalities and domain knowledge shall be developed.
Your tasks
Conducting a literature survey on the state of the art in linking ecological simulation models (esp. individual-based approaches) with techniques from informed machine learning; Planning and applying ML methods for developing a emulator for the honeybee model BEEHAVE; in particular, use BEEHAVE for the generation of synthetic data set for training the aspired informed ML algorithms by accounting for causality; Integrating the BEEHAVE-emulator in the mentioned digital twin; Actively participating in networking activities with AI/ML experts from different teams

Your profile
Very good graduation (diploma or MSc) in a relevant discipline (e.g. Applied System Sciences, Computational Ecology, Applied Mathematics or similar); Experience with the development and analysis of ecological simulation models (esp. individual-based approaches); Strong interest in familiarizing, applying and further advancing methods for linking ecological simulation models with techniques from machine learning; Excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, Java, R and similar); Very good English skills (writing and speaking); Interest in working in an interdisciplinary and international team.-
