Plant Project Engineer

EU-DE-Hattingen Headquarter

Job Description and Qualifications

At Air Products, our purpose is to bring people together to reimagine what’s possible, collaborate and innovate solutions to the world’s most significant energy and environmental sustainability challenges. Reimagine What’s Possible

Context of the role and team:

As a Project Engineer you’ll join our Northern Continent Operations Engineering Team and you will be responsible for executing assigned projects in support of our regional objectives.  You will provide leadership for the development, execution and control of assigned proposals and projects, with the ultimate goal of achieving project completion on time, within budgets, to the satisfaction of the customer, and at acceptable levels of quality without compromising safety or reliability. Project scopes of supply may vary widely, but will generally include equipment supply, engineering design, construction, and start-up services. Typical project activities include: technical liaison to the business area and to the plant as single point of contact for communication and resolution of project issues, review and interpretation of RFQs, accountability for the definition of scope of supply and preparation of proposals, resource planning, defining and leading a project team, system design and specification, equipment procurement, equipment fabrication, drawing packages, value engineering, scope of supply documentation, contractor procurement, construction procurement and management, system commissioning and start-up, project status reports and close out. Operations Project work is very different from working on a major green field site project. These jobs are smaller and fast moving thus successful completion gives a real sense of achievement. It is very demanding and also satisfying and enjoyable. No two jobs are identical.

As a Project Engineer, you will:

Play a dual role as project development and project execution engineer. Execute projects primarily in Germany but might be in other European countries as required and agreed. Have responsibility from the technical aspect for leading a project team in defining and completing an agreed upon scope of supply. This includes, as required by the specific project, performing and/or the coordination of resources to complete the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, start-up and commissioning tasks. Assume ownership of project safety, budget, schedule, and technical quality to achieve the project and business objectives established at the start of the project. A typical project team consists of a matrixed organization and may also include external contractors and consultants. Work closely with the business area and line management to develop the opportunity into a well-defined estimate that meets the requirements of the scope of supply. Provide technical point of contact to the business area for assigned projects. Ensure that proposals and projects comply with company standards and procedures. Report to management on project status.

What we’ll be looking for:

An Engineering Degree or equivalent in an appropriate branch of Engineering. Broad general technical knowledge and principles, i.e. Process, Machinery, Electrical, instrument, mechanical / civils and controls from 5+ years relevant experience. Leadership in safety, cost, scope definition and execution. Adequate and timely coordination of the project team to meet the project’s goals Ability to adjust to the unexpected, adapt prior knowledge to unique situations and manage competing priorities Ability to provide a mature and steady presence to coordinate the project team Ability to distinguish between the contractual needs and desires of the customer to manage and resolve scope issues that may arise. Ability to work within a team framework with other internal disciplines (e.g. accounting, purchasing) and with external contacts (e.g. customers, contractors, legal entities, equipment vendors, etc.) Perseverance through obstacles, tenacious in nature. Skills for negotiating, resolving differences, and developing consensus to secure win/win agreements Enthusiastic self-starter with excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Ability to successfully engage and manage others remotely, since many in your project team will be based at other locations. Ability to lead construction safety management, including safety audits and implementation of company safety requirements. Ability and willingness to travel for short periods (days) for activities such as site inspections and longer (weeks) for plant construction periods including outages.
