The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutes in the fields of III-V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum technological components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the security, health, energy, information, and communication markets.

 

Using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), we develop methods for the production of complex nitride semiconductor layer sequences. To this end, we work closely with internal and external project partners and industrial customers who are looking for reliable and efficient solutions in the field of epitaxy of GaN-based heterostructures.


As part of a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians, you will be involved in current research projects to develop innovative electronic and optoelectronic components for numerous applications, e.g., in power electronics.

 

What you will do

You will lead our »III-Nitrides« group in the Epitaxy department ‒ a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians involved in ongoing research projects aimed at developing innovative electronic and optoelectronic components for a broad range of applications, e.g., in power electronics.

  • You will assume scientific responsibility for the MOCVD of nitride semiconductors, as well as the safe and effective operation of the large-scale systems involved.
  • Furthermore, you will support our technicians and engineers and guide them as they operate, optimize, and maintain the systems.
  • You will optimize existing MOCVD processes and develop new ones, using optical and atomic force microscopy to characterize the surface morphology of epitaxial layers and utilize capacitance-voltage (CV) and Hall measurements to determine their electrical properties.
  • Additionally, you will evaluate the quality of materials based on the results of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL).
  • You will analyze/model the growth kinetics of epitaxy processes and use characterization data of devices fabricated using the epitaxial layers to adjust the growth conditions to improve device performance parameters. 
  • In close cooperation with other groups and departments of the institute, you will lead research projects or subprojects and contribute to the acquisition of new research projects from public and industrial clients.
     

 

What you bring to the table

  • You hold a degree (master's or diploma) in physics, chemistry, crystallography, materials science, or a related field, preferably with a PhD.
  • You have a scientific interest and professional experience in the fields of epitaxy, crystal growth, or growth kinetics and a basic understanding of semiconductor devices.
  • You have experience in metal organic chemical vapor deposition or alternative epitaxy processes.
  • Throughout your career, you have gained hands-on experience in project planning, coordination, and project management. 
  • You are characterized by your team spirit, strong communication skills, and an independent, goal-oriented work style.
  • A good command of English (B2+) rounds off your profile.

The weekly working time is 39 hours.  Appointment, remuneration, and social security benefits are based on the German public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). This position is also available on a part-time basis.
