As Senior Director Dangerous Goods you are legally responsible for all dangerous goods transport worldwide in compliance with all international, national and local legal dangerous goods regulations. In this role, you must ensure that Hapag-Lloyd complies with all these requirements. Furthermore, the job incumbent is responsible for all dangerous goods related operations globally and leads the global dangerous goods department. Beyond that, as “Global Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor” (according to “Gefahrgutbeauftragtenverordnung”) for sea, road, rail and inland waterway transport, you will ensure the safety and well-being of our seafarers, our assets and the environment at any time.
You are also part of our Strategy 2030 by optimizing the efficiency of the entire dangerous goods process as this is one of the core elements in the implementation.
- Lead and mentor a department of dedicated, international dangerous goods professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration
- Manage and drive Hapag Lloyd’s dangerous goods capabilities and reputation across the organization as well as further develop dangerous goods guidelines based on established industry leading standards, leveraging operational excellence at a global level with various stakeholder
- Collaborate and resolve conflicts with global partner lines and cooperate with global authorities, competent authorities and laboratories in a trustful relationship plus resolve high-level concerns related to dangerous goods issues
- Maintain a high level of dangerous goods ownership and expertise within the Hapag Lloyd Sales & Customer Service organisation as well as towards customers through global F2F dangerous goods roadshows and dedicated training
- Strengthen and accelerate the validation of the dangerous goods in our Knowledge Centre (KC) a in Gdansk (Poland) also including monitoring the process performance and facilitating the steering of the KC for the future
- Frequent review of the global dangerous goods organisation and continuous striving for efficiency improvements without compromising safety as well as setting and developing operational targets and KPIs to be presented in regular C-level meetings
- Willingness to actively participate in, potentially lead and steer international working groups under the umbrella of the WSC or IVODGA
- Ensure that all seafarers have the legally required dangerous goods training for ship handling in accordance with the IMDG Code / 49 CFR
- Extensive experience in a similar role covering international shipping operations with excellent knowledge of dangerous goods
- Proven track record of experience in leadership of large international teams, including team management, motivation, and talent development
- Experience and effective participation in international working groups preferred
- Strong ability to work under high pressure and with high personal responsibility for Hapag-Lloyd seafarers and assets at any time
- Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and interact in matrix organization up to C-level
- Experience in driving negotiations and delivering results as well as the ability to make balanced decisions and present detailed issues clearly to both the team and stakeholders
- High Project Management knowledge coupled with very strong communication skills
- Strong analytical and organizational qualities
- Capability to fluently speak, read and write in English - any other additional languages are a plus
- Willingness to travel frequently
