GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR ( F acility for A ntiproton and I on R esearch) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. Since 2008, GSI is operating PHELIX, the largest laser facility in Germany, for the international scientific community. The facility is a dual front-end nanosecond and sub-picosecond laser that benefits from the worldwide unique combination of expertise in laser and heavy-ion physics located around Darmstadt.
To maintain PHELIX’s attractiveness and prepare the next generation of high-energy lasers, GSI and FAIR have started a EU funded project named THRILL ( T echnology for H igh- R epetition-rate I ntense L aser L aboratories) with eight other partners in Europe. The THRILL project deals with providing new schemes and devices for pushing forward the limits of research infrastructures (RI) of European relevance and ESFRI landmarks. The project partners have identified several technical bottlenecks in high-energy high-repetition-rate laser technology that prevent it from reaching the technical readiness level required to technically specify and build the needed devices. Physicist or Engineer (all genders) at the PHELIX facility

to perform research within the THRILL project in a small research group.
Your tasks:
Development/Improvement of Nd:glass based laser amplifier heads which are actively cooled by a suitable liquid Investigation of the mechanical and optical effects both in simulations (e.g. ANSYS, possibly COMSOL or similar Multiphysics tools) and in the laboratory on a dedicated test stand for optical wave front measurements Good knowledge in high-energy high-intensity laser physics is necessary in both theory and practiceSince the project is shared among European partners, frequent short-term visits and staff exchanges are foreseen.
In addition, the candidate will be integrated in the PHELIX operation team and will be trained as shot director/operator for the normal operation of PHELIX.
Your profile and desirable qualification:
University degree as Physicist or Engineer (mechanical/optomechanical engineering) or a related field or a comparable qualification Experience in work in laser environments, preferably high-energy laser systems CAD experience, e.g. Autodesk Inventor, CATIA Data taking and analysis with electric and electronic sensors like cameras, temperature and pressure sensors Experience in mechanical lab work on liquid cooling circuits, large-size optics and optomechanics Basic knowledge of optical wave front measurement and compensation techniques A strong interest to work in an international environment and excellent team-working capabilityNew development ideas based on the candidate’s experience are also welcome if they meet the institute’s mid- to long-term development goals.
We offer an employment contract with a duration until Dec. 31st 2026, starting ASAP. The salary is based on the German civil service employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).
