Engineering Area Manager

We are seeking a highly motivated Engineering Area Manager - Metrology (f/m/d) to join one of our portfolio companies. As part of the Engineering department, you will lead and manage metrology systems and processes, guiding a team to deploy standard metrology systems and develop advanced solutions to meet the unique challenges of our technology.
In your day-to-day work, you will lead the metrology team, while ensuring the selection, optimisation, and operation of metrology equipment and processes are in alignment with the goals of our pilot line facility. This position demands strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, innovative environment.

In this role, you’ll:- Finalise the selection of metrology-related equipment, including negotiating and approving acceptance test protocols with vendors (Months 0-3)
- Build a systematic metrology data management strategy alongside colleagues in factory automation and technical computing, ensuring a smooth pilot line launch (Months 3-18)
- Hire and manage a high-performing team of Process Engineers and Equipment Engineers to support metrology systems (Months 3-9)
- Standardise working methodologies across the fab-engineering organisation, aligning with peers in other manufacturing areas (Months 3-9)
- Execute equipment baselining (GRR) for metrology platforms as they become available, enabling process teams to access actionable, reliable feedback (SPC) (Months 6-24)
- Prioritise and implement metrology improvement projects using data-driven approaches in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues (Months 18+)
- Foster cross-functional skill development within your team to support professional growth and effective redundancy (Months 12+)
- Address gaps in responsibilities in a start-up environment, communicating evolving needs and dependencies proactively (Ongoing)
- 5+ years of direct experience in engineering roles in a semiconductor 200mm or 300mm fab, or at a major wafer-metrology OEM
- A PhD, MSc, or BSc in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field, with significant industrial experience for BSc holders
- Hands-on experience with metrology systems controlled by SECS/GEM, and familiarity with automated data collection to centralised systems. Please state systems you are familiar with in your cover letter
- Working knowledge of FMEA, SPC, DOE, and statistically supported hypothesis testing (e.g., JMP)
- Previous experience in people management or leadership roles within technical or R&D teams
- Ability to work in cleanroom environments with strict contamination protocols
- Flexibility to interact with colleagues across multiple shifts when required
- Excellent communication skills in English
Please note that we are looking for support in the Aachen office of our portfolio company. Eligibility to work within the EU is required as well.
