About the position

PhD Student (m/f/d) - Electron tomography of epitaxially strained heterostructure

Due to the ongoing miniaturization of modern opto-electronic devices towards low dimensionality and nanometric size, interfaces between different materials are becoming increasingly important for the functionality of these devices and their performances. This fact is all the more significant because interfaces are three-dimensional (3D) objects defined by their topography and a transition region perpendicular to the interface plane formed by atom interdiffusion. Advanced electron tomography allows reconstructing the 3D structure information of semiconductor interfaces and thereby independently determining both morphological roughness, alloy disorder and chemical intermixing. 

In this project, the successful candidate will work on electron tomography investigations of epitaxial interfaces between very dissimilar materials with special focus on the influence of epitaxial strain. Of particular interest in this context is the scale dependence of this interface property and the strain distribution, which is to be investigated by specifically varying the material combination and the diameter of the tomography needle to be reconstructed.

Your responsibilities
  • Target preparation of samples for electron tomography by focused ion beam techniques 
  • Performing tilt series with high-angle annular dark-field imaging in a high-end Cs-corrected STEM 
  • Conducting 3D tomographic reconstruction and data analysis
  • Collaboration in the Application Laboratory Electron Tomography 
  • Presentation of results at conferences and in publications
  • Pursuing a doctoral degree in physics
Your profile
  • Master degree in physics electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field
  • Preferential good background in condensed matter physics, functional materials or nanotechnology
  • Experience in transmission electron microscopy 
  • Basic knowledge of sample preparation by focused ion beam technique
  • Good communication skills and the spirit to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse team
Position and salary

This position is available from October 15, 2024 and is limited to a 3-year period.

Salary and benefits are according to the Treaty for German public service (TVöD Bund) to a level of E13 (75%), taking work experience and special professional skills into account.
