Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. The CMS Secretariat also provides the Secretariat for the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS). In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS). The consultant will be responsible for performing the following duties, as required:

• Develop and implement a comprehensive media outreach strategy:
• Create a tailored plan that addresses the specific objectives and target audiences of COP15.
• Ensure the strategy aligns with the overall outreach goals and messaging framework.
• Draft, review, and disseminate communication materials:
• Prepare media advisories, press releases, and briefing documents for distribution to relevant journalists and media outlets.
• Ensure all materials are accurate, timely, and reflect key messages.
• Organize and facilitate media events: o Coordinate and manage the logistics for COP15 media briefings and press conferences. o Ensure that all key messages are communicated clearly and consistently during these events.
• Monitor and analyze media coverage:
• Track media coverage related to COP15 across various channels (print, digital, broadcast, social media).
• Analyze trends, sentiment, and relevance of coverage.
• Prepare and submit a comprehensive media monitoring report following the event.
• Coordinate with internal teams and stakeholders:
• Work closely with relevant internal departments and partners to ensure all communications are accurate and consistent.
• Facilitate information sharing and alignment of messaging across teams.
• Respond to media inquiries: o Act as the primary point of contact for journalists and media representatives. o Provide accurate and timely responses to all media requests and questions.
• Identify and pursue proactive media engagement opportunities:
• Seek out and develop opportunities to increase the visibility and impact of COP15 activities and outcomes through proactive outreach.
• Pitch stories, op-eds, and interviews to relevant media outlets to amplify key messages. The consultant will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Coordinator of the Information Management, Communications and Awareness-raising Unit (IMCA) and the overall supervision of the CMS Executive Secretary.

Qualifications/special Skills
Education: A first level university degree in journalism and mass media, public relations and communication, business management, international relations or any other relevant social science field is required. Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in journalism and mass media, public relations and communication, business management, international relations or any other relevant social science field with 7 years of experience will be accepted. At least 9 years of demonstrated working experience in the area of international traditional media, advising global media strategies and providing regular media monitoring is required. Solid and verifiable list of at least 5,000 personal contacts with international media outlets/journalists focused on environmental issues is required. Access to professional media monitoring tools, notably Meltwater is required. Experience with UN agencies and other international organizations is highly desired. Experience in a media field related to the environment, sustainable development or biodiversity conservation is desired.

Languages

Language: English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the CMS Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
