Experimental & Computational Physicist (MSc -PhD Kandidat/)

ArthroTarget is a MedTech startup developing in-body magnetic drug targeting systems.We are entering the experimental validation and laboratory research phase, where our simulation and experimental work will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE)/Freiburg and associated clinical partners under the EXIST Forschungstransfer framework.This position can be structured asa Master's Thesis (TV-L E11–E12, 50–100%),a PhD position (TV-L E13, 50–100%),depending on your background and project fit. Your Role• Electromagnetic field design & analysisDesigning, analyzing, and optimizing static and gradient magnetic fields, complex magnetic field configurations, magnetic force distributions, and vertical magnetic gradients.• Computational modelingUsing COMSOL Multiphysics, Ansys Maxwell, CST Studio, or FEMM to model magnetic fields and magnetic forces; working with boundary conditions, mesh optimization, and magnetic material models.• Experimental system developmentBuilding small-scale magnetic setups, performing magnetic field measurements (Hall probe, gaussmeter), and conducting tests with tissue-mimicking phantoms and flow-based systems.• Integrating simulation & experimental dataValidating models with measurements, performing error analysis, extracting scaling laws, and generating publishable datasets.• Contributing to scientific & technical outputsPreparing material for publications, patents, EXIST/Forschungstransfer submissions, and technical documentation.• Interdisciplinary collaborationWorking alongside UDE researchers in physics & biology, clinical partners, and the ArthroTarget founding team—bringing a willingness to think across disciplines. Requirements• MSc or PhD in Physics, Medical Physics, Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, or willingness to pursue your degree within the project(preferably with strong foundations in electromagnetism, field theory, and magnetism)• Strong understanding of electromagnetismLorentz force, magnetic gradients, dipole fields, superposition, magnetic material behavior (μr, remanence, coercivity)• Practical knowledge of magnetic materials and field-generation methodspermanent magnet arrays, electromagnet design, coil geometries, Halbach configurations, current density & thermal considerations• Experience with simulation tools(preferably COMSOL or Ansys Maxwell on magnetic problems)• Experimental skillsbasic mechanical assembly, sensor usage, data acquisition, noise/error analysis•German (C1)required;Englishis an advantage• Motivation to contribute to early-stage scientific proof generation in a deep-tech MedTech environment(comfortable stepping outside the comfort zone and solving problems using physical principles) What We Offer• Joint simulation + experimental infrastructure with UDE & Uniklinikum• Strong opportunities for high-impact publications & patents• Transition into a fully funded position after EXIST Forschungstransfer approval• Hybrid academic × startup career track• Long-term potential for leadership or Co-Founder role How to ApplyPlease send your CV and a short motivation letter to ->
