What to Expect
The Refractory Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and ensuring the optimal condition of our Melting and Holding Furnaces to consistently supply the Die Casting machines. The Engineer will prioritize Safety, Quality, and Efficiency in Furnace operations. Additionally, you will continuously improve the performance of the Furnaces to meet future challenges within the Casting Shop. This position reports to the Gigafactory Berlin Manager of Operations Forming.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the primary person responsible for the maintenance of refractory materials in our Furnaces.
- Assess and analyze current practices to drive continuous improvement.
- Monitor and evaluate key product characteristics.
- Enforce proper material management procedures.
- Support and manage continuous improvement activities related to safety, environmental standards, quality, cost, efficiency, and productivity objectives; provide feedback to management on issues; benchmark best practices from other organizations.
- Identify cost reduction opportunities and implement them in collaboration with the Production and Manufacturing Engineering teams at Gigafactory Berlin.
- Work closely with our Environmental Engineer to ensure compliance with permit requirements.
- Develop expert-level training programs for technicians to handle minor repairs in-house and support the team.
- Monitor process parameters and energy consumption of the entire system.
- Identify recycling opportunities for scrap materials and implement them within the factory.
- Organize, lead, and take responsibility for safety improvements, instructions, and training for the melting team.
What You'll Bring
- BS/MS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or over 5 years of experience maintaining furnaces in similar industries.
- Fluency in English or German is required.
- Experience in a High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) production environment or equivalent.
- Commitment to continuous improvement.
- Strong understanding of standardized processes.
- Ability to build close working relationships with team members and management.
- Detail-oriented with excellent record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Availability for off-hours calls.
