2 PhD Positions in Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Chiral Organic Molecules at Heidelberg University (f/m/d) (50%)

2 PhD positions are advertised at the Institute for Physical Chemistry in the research group of Prof. Felix Deschler under the remit of the collaborative research center SFB 1249. The positions are available immediately (fixed term contract, end of funding period

These 3-year research projects will focus on spectroscopic investigations of ultrafast dynamics in organic molecular semiconductors. As a PhD student in the group, you will use advanced ultrafast spectroscopy techniques for emerging material characterization. Core questions will be how structural motifs control ultrafast excitation dynamics and coherent electronic state evolution in chiral organic molecular semiconductors.

The PhD projects are available in the areas of:

1) Chirality in the Ultrafast Dynamics of Excited Electronic States in N-Heteropolycycles (Prof. Felix Deschler)

2) Investigation of coherent charge carrier transport in N-Heteropolycycles with novel ultrafast microscopy methods (Dr. Julia Anthea Gessner)

For more information, please see our website:

Research in our group focuses on Ultrafast Dynamics in Condensed Matter with focus on resolving the question how material structure and composition control properties and dynamics of electronic states on ultrafast timescales, and how this paves the way for novel material function. For gaining fundamental insights into the underlying mechanisms, we use and develop time-resolved spectroscopic techniques from the X-ray to the IR regime.

The SFB 1249, a collaborative research center funded by the DFG, is based at the Faculty of Chemistry of Heidelberg University, bringing together researchers within a multidisciplinary research program on "N-heteropolycycles as functional materials". The program offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary working environment, invited talks, networking events with other PhD students and access to international conferences.

Candidates should hold a M.Sc. in chemistry, physics, material sciences or related disciplines. To join our interdisciplinary team, we are looking for creative, enthusiastic students with a solid scientific track record and strong experimental background. Experience in ultrafast spectroscopy or organic molecules will be an advantage. We support equal opportunity and candidates from currently under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Your Tasks:

  • Development and application of algorithms for modelling, evaluation and visualization of ultrafast processes
  • Investigation of ultrafast dynamics in organic semiconductors
  • Analysis of experimental results, literature work, scientific discussion
  • Dissemination of project results with publications, presentations and outreach events

Your Profile:

  • Successfully completed undergraduate studies (M.Sc.) in chemistry, physics, material science, or a related field
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: Experimental Physical Chemistry or Physics, Time-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, Photochemistry, Functional Material Dynamics, Laser Physics or Ultrafast Optics
  • Experience in Python, MatLab or C++ is an advantage
  • Good communication skills in English (oral and written)
  • Interest in scientific collaboration and exchange with experimental and theoretical groups
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team, strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a team

We offer:

  • Excellent and innovative research environment
  • State-of-the art laboratory infrastructure
  • Collegial, interdisciplinary, and diversity-friendly international working environment
  • Remuneration will be based on TV-L (50%)

To apply for these positions please send your application (curriculum vitae, M.Sc. transcript and a brief statement that explains your motivation for pursuing a Ph.D.) as a single PDF file via email to our administrative staff by October 31, 2025
