You work closely with physicists, hardware engineers, and project managers, translating technical requirements into robust procurement decisions. This includes evaluating specifications, feasibility, supplier quality, and risks. A further focus is export control compliance and the responsible handling of sensitive technologies.
Technical Purchasing & Supplier Management
Procurement of high-tech components including optics, lasers, RF/microwave, precision parts, electronics, vacuum technology, cryogenics, and specialty materials
Technical analysis and evaluation of specifications, drawings, tolerances, and bills of materials
Verification that ordered components meet the technical requirements of physics and engineering teams
Selection, qualification, and development of suitable suppliers in Germany and internationally
Requesting, evaluating, and negotiating quotations, often with small, highly specialized suppliers
Coordination of sample parts, prototypes, and Series 0 production
Interface with R&D / Physics / Engineering
Close collaboration with optical, microwave, ion trap, firmware, and hardware engineering teams
Technical support to project teams regarding material selection, manufacturing processes, alternative solutions, and supplier feasibility
Support of make-or-buy decisions
Early involvement in development projects to ensure procurement feasibility and short realization times
Export Control & Compliance
Ensure compliance with German, European, and US export control regulations (BAFA, Dual Use)
Classification of components in cooperation with Legal, Compliance, and Engineering
Review of end-use statements, supplier documentation, and country-specific restrictions
Responsibility for correct and compliant ordering of critical technologies
Cost, Quality & Scheduling
Preparation of cost forecasts and sourcing strategies
Negotiation of prices, payment terms, delivery schedules, and technical conditions
Close monitoring of schedules, availability, and project risks
Cost optimization without compromising quality (Value Engineering)
Required skills:
Completed technical degree (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mechatronics, precision engineering) or equivalent technical qualification
Several years of experience in technical purchasing, ideally in prototyping, high-tech environments, lasers/optics, electronics, or precision engineering
Ability to read and understand technical drawings, specifications, and bills of materials
Confident handling of high-tech supply chains
Experience with dual-use and export control regulations, or strong willingness to learn
Structured, reliable, and solution-oriented working style
Fluent English and German
Strong communication skills and confidence working with physicists, engineers, and suppliers
Nice-to-have:
Experience in R&D-adjacent procurement processes
Knowledge of ERP systems and technical documentation standards
