Job Summary
The Supervisor, Sr. Scientist services as Principal Investigator for multiple programs/projects in the research laboratory. Provides leadership, direction and mentorship to junior scientists and technical support staff within the laboratory. Works with scientists across the Research Institute and serves as a scientific subject matter expert for Research Institute leadership and for the organization. Collaborates with Research Institute leadership on the strategic direction of research in service of the organization's Mission and Vision. Utilizes scientific theory and applications and to apply this knowledge towards the development of scientific experiments to test hypotheses to solve complex research problems. Secures extramural funding for research leading to a better understanding of childhood disease by identifying funding opportunities and writing scientific proposals for submission to peer-review federal and other funding agencies. Serves as the first or corresponding author on at least three manuscripts accepted for peer reviewed scientific publication each year. Oversees the preparation of abstracts and posters for presentation at scientific conferences with the expectation of delivering at least one podium presentation at a recognized scientific conference each year.Pay Range

The Division of Surgery at Rady Children's Health, located in Orange County, is seeking a highly motivated and talented Supervisor, Senior Scientist to join a multidisciplinary team investigating the novel application of tissue engineering and stem cell therapies in the treatment of burn injuries and repair of developmental defects (such as those that occur in the esophagus or diaphragm) in pediatric populations. This leadership position will support cutting-edge translational research aimed at improving outcomes for children suffering from developmental defects as well as severe burn and other injuries through cellular therapies, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine approaches. The incumbent should be well-versed in (1) stem cell methodologies including optimization of stem cell growth, differentiation, tracking of stem cells from graft to host tissues, and freezing algorithms; (2) tissue procedures including tissue culture, tissue perfusion and cannulation, and perfusate solution optimization; and (3) animal surgery/recovery.
Responsibilities:
• Leads multiple programs/projects in the research laboratory.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for Research Institute leadership and for the organization.
• Collaborates with Research Institute leadership on the strategic plan in service of the organization's Mission and Vision.
• Conducts independent and collaborative research on tissue and stem cell applications for correction of developmental abnormalities, burn
wound healing, scar reduction, and immune modulation in pediatric models.
• Designs and executes experiments involving tissue engineering, stem cell culture, differentiation, and characterization.
• Utilizes in vitro and in vivo models of developmental abnormalities and burn injury, including animal models, to test therapeutic efficacy and safety.
• Analyzes and interprets experimental data; present findings at lab meetings, scientific conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.
• Secures extramural funding for research leading to a better understanding of childhood disease.
• Contributes to protocol development and regulatory submissions to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal
Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
• Serves as the first or corresponding author on at least three manuscripts accepted for peer reviewed scientific publication each year. Oversees the preparation of abstracts and posters for presentation at scientific conferences with the expectation of delivering at least one podium presentation at a recognized scientific conference each year.
• Provides leadership, direction, and mentorship to graduate students, post-doc research fellows, medical students, residents, or clinical fellows, as appropriate.
• Stays current with relevant scientific literature and apply new methods and concepts to research goals.
Experience
Required: Minimum seven (7) years of scientific research experience. Experience supervising junior scientists and/or laboratory support personnel. Experience obtaining funding for research projects.
Preferred: History of NIH track record of sustained research funding.
Education
Required: Doctoral degree in medical, biological or research-related technical sciences from an accredited college or university.
Preferred: Research experience in a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) environment.
