Autonomy Functions Engineer

Description
Do you want to work on a New Class of Drones? Our product universe spans three different platforms with maximum take-off weights of up to 1000 kg characteristic dimension of 8 m: the hexacopter Grille for medical evacuation, the multi-role rotorcraft Wespe for logistics and support operations, as well as the fixed-wing drone Bussard for surveillance and intelligence missions. All systems are powered by RasCore, our highly redundant, military-grade avionics system for safe operations within EASA's Specific Category. Three aircraft, one mission: to bridge the gap between small UAVs and traditional manned systems.
Have you ever dreamed of giving machines the ability to see and understand the world around them? Have you ever wanted to teach an aircraft how to make safe and reliable decisions on its own? If these questions spark your curiosity, you might be the perfect fit. As an Autonomy Engineer at Avilus, you design and develop the perception and decision-making functions that allow our unmanned aerial vehicles in the several-hundred-kilogram class to operate safely and effectively. From landing site assessment to detect-and-avoid and terrain following, you'll enable the aircraft to sense, interpret, and react to its environment with confidence. Working closely with colleagues across avionics, systems, and flight testing, you'll bring together advanced sensor sand intelligent algorithms to create robust autonomy features. Your role spans the entire lifecycle – from defining requirements and architectures, through simulation and algorithm development, all the way to hardware-in-the-loop and flight validation. In short: you'll give our aircraft the "eyes and brain" they need to fly safely in a complex world.
Tasks
- Design, implementation and integration of autonomy functions such as landing site assessment, detect-and-avoid, and terrain following
- Sensor evaluation, selection, and integration (e.g., lidar, radar, EO/IR, GNSS/INS)
- Development of perception, sensor fusion, and decision-making algorithms in simulation and real-time environments
- Verification and validation of autonomy functions, including hardware-in-the-loop and flight test activities
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration with systems engineering, avionics, and flight testing teams
