The Town is currently looking for summer students to work in the Operations & Environmental Services Department.Job Duties Include
Summer students are responsible for performing grounds maintenance tasks including litter pick up, mowing grass, trimming, annual planting of flowers, trees and shrubs and/or assist in general roads maintenance, construction activities and special event set-ups. Subject to work group assignments, these positions may be required to operate a range of vehicles and maintenance equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, pickup trucks, string trimmers, roto tillers, blowers, and a variety of hand tools.
Eligibility
- To be eligible for a summer student position with the Town of Ajax you must be currently enrolled in post-secondary studies in college or university.
- Documentation of school enrollment is required.
Term of Employment
- Candidates must be available to work from April 27, 2026 to August 28, 2026 and work the entire four (4) month period
- Be available to work 40 hours per week over a seven-day period (including shifts, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays)
Qualifications/Skills
- Previous work experience performing grounds maintenance tasks including operating equipment, litter pick up, mowing grass, trimming, planting of flowers, trees and shrubs, construction activities and special event set-ups is considered an asset;
- Excellent customer service and good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to deal with the public courteously and efficiently;
- Strong communication skills, able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions;
- Candidates must be physically able to perform all duties including heavy lifting, prolonged standing and walking on uneven surfaces;
- Candidates are expected to work outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions;
- Students hired to drive Town vehicles will be required to hold a valid "G" drivers license and have a clear driver's abstract;
- A criminal record check that is satisfactory to the Town will be required of the successful candidate.
Driver's License Requirement
- Preference will be given to those students who have or will have a valid Class "G" license with no demerit points as of March 2026. Once the Town has hired the required number of students with a valid driver's license, consideration will be given to other applicants regardless of whether they hold a valid license or not.
Criminal Record Check
- Applicants are advised that a Criminal Record Check will be required prior to being hired into the summer student position.
