Introduction

Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has an abundance of information about human mobility: With offices in almost every country, IOM is trusted by its Member States for its deep knowledge and field expertise. IOM has strategic partnerships with other UN agencies and stakeholders in the UN Migration Network. It works directly with a wide range of beneficiaries and is at the forefront of data protection efforts within the UN system.

The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP) project was developed in response to the critical need to collect and analyze information on (protracted) displacement and human mobility in, to and from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and to contribute to evidence-based humanitarian and development programming in these countries and in the region.

Working under the overall supervision of the Global DTM Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Manager of DTM REMAP project based in Berlin, Germany the intern will support the concern unit for smooth implementation of ongoing work.

Responsibilities: Assist in researching and drafting dashboards and prepare data for flash information sheets, papers and reports describing and analyzing human mobility of Afghan, Bangladeshi, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pakistani, Tajik and Uzbek nationals inside their countries and across international borders in both English and Russian language.

Assist in compiling, analyzing, visualizing human mobility data within Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan for DTM REMAP reporting purposes in both English and Russian language.

Support development and implementation of supplementary and interoperable systems for quality assurance and further improvement of DTM REMAP data and analysis.

Support in analysing new assignments, developing scripts and tests to validate data, handling change requests and providing quick and efficient solutions to data sourcing issues.

Support in building requirements, metadata, backup procedures, and process documentation, and overall management of dataset addition process.

Works with various parts of the global DTM Support team to ensure that content is delivered on-time, regardless of system issues, and that the format and structure supports the operational requirements.

Support on development of data queries for internal use as require, as well as one-time data pulls from database as requested.

Ensure that the implementation of the information management systems and application adhere to IOM Data Protection Policy and Information Technology and Communication (ITC) Policies and Standards, including on system and data security.

Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training components and learning elements

Gain in-depth knowledge on the migration data, displacement tracking matrix (DTM), emergency and post-crisis migration and displacement portfolio.

Opportunities to attend e-workshops, e-meetings and/or e-webinars with internal and external counterparts and engage with staff at national and regional offices.

- Apply data science knowledge and tools in practice.

*Qualifications: Education

Pursuing degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics or related field; with two years of relevant professional experience.

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience

Experience in compiling, collecting, and analyzing data from different sources, structured and unstructured; and,

Experience with Natural Language Processing and Sentiment Analysis is a advantageous.

Skills

Good data visualization skills on HTML5 or JavaScript environments, AngularJS, NodeJS, or D3 is a advantageous;

Strong SQL developer skills. Proficiency in Python 3 (preferable) or any other multi-purpose programming language;

Capability to transform ideas into algorithms and programming code/apps; and,

Excitement and interest in for spatio-temporal data and their relation with Big Data technologies, with an eagerness to jump in on day one.

Languages

IOM's official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Russian, and Uzbek languages, and/or another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
